 Knocking Around Burlington
Burlington to Ferrisburgh, Vermont

Enjoy a day knocking around Burlington without visiting a single Ethan Allen landmark (at least not on purpose). Take in street entertainers and local color downtown in the Church Street Marketplace area. Top your stroll through acres of extraordinary gardens with a new culinary masterpiece. And top that off with the most politically correct ice cream cone you'll ever eat. This ultra-hip, laid-back town should be enjoyed at an easy pace, much like the Quakers once did.

Ben & Jerry's Factory Tour
1281 Waterbury-Stowe Rd
Waterbury, VT 05676
Call (802) 882-1240

Guided half-hour tours of a Ben and Jerry's factory let visitors lap up the history of one of ice cream's most beloved (and politically opinionated) brands. And yes, free samples are part of the deal. Tours take place year-round and include a "moovie," a close-up view of the manufacturing process, and a chance to stop in the on-site ice-cream shop and gift shop. In summer, bring a lawn chair and stay late for free outdoor movies (check the web site to see what's playing when). On the grounds there's also a cow-viewing area, a picnic spot, and the Flavor Graveyard, where ill-conceived flavors (such as the short-lived Economic Crunch) have been laid to rest. Call for tour hours, as they are open at different times depending on the month (fees may apply). Take Exit 10 off I-89; go north on Route 100 towards Stowe. The factory is on the left, about a mile up the road.

Rokeby Museum
4334 Rte 7
Ferrisburgh, VT 05456
Call (802) 877-3406

About half an hour outside Burlington lies the Rokeby Museum, a former Quaker farm and well-documented stop on the Underground Railroad. Visitors can take a guided tour of the house where fugitive slaves were once welcomed, or stroll the grounds on their own to see the smokehouse, creamery, and other outbuildings. The family that lived here for four generations was a frugal one, meaning that the farm contains a wealth of period furniture, household items, clothing, books, and more. The museum is open mid-May to mid-October, and three guided tours a day are offered Thursday-Sunday.
